Install IIS 8 (Windows 2012 r2)

If you have a Windows-based server, you probably want to expose it to the internet to do things like host websites. To do that, you have to install Microsoft's web server, Internet Information Services (more commonly known as IIS).

  1. Connect to your server via RDC.
  2. From the Start menu, click Server Manager.

  3. Click Add roles and features.

  4. On the Before you begin page, click Next.
  5. On the Installation type page, select Role-based... and then click Next.
  6. On the Server selection page, select the server you want to use and then click Next.
  7. On the Server roles page, select Web Server (IIS).

  8. On the pop-up window, click Add Features.

  9. Click Next.
  10. On the Features page, select the features you want and then click Next.
  11. On the Web Server Role (IIS), click Next.
  12. On the Role Services page, select the role services you want to use and then click Next.

    Note: You can click a role for a description of it or get more information from Microsoft.

  13. Click Install.

Your server will now go through the process of installing IIS, which can take a while. Once it's done, you'll receive a flag in the Server Manager.

  • Launch IIS by going to Start > Server Manager > Tools > Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
